KidsHubs in the USA

In the month of September and October 2015, KidsHubs was introduced to some ethnic churches in Minnesota, USA. KidsHubs drama sessions were run with the Hmong Church in Minneapolis. The children were enthusiastic and loved it. After doing the session on Jesus healing the paralytic, the children prayed for each other’s healing and the healing of family members. The children were then prayed over with their families at the main service and words of prophecy about their destiny were spoken over their lives. It was a very powerful service where families experienced God together.

At the Ethiopian Church in St. Paul, Minnesota 70 children aged 8-15 years were involved in a KidsHubs media session. It was challenging yet God ministered to the children. 22 children aged 8-12 years from the same church took part in a KidsHub drama session. The children prayed and committed to trust only in Jesus knowing he has the power over every situation in their lives.

KidsHubTV

KidsHubTV began as a kid’s club-style TV show made in India and Madagascar. It mirrored the local KidsHub groups featuring a Bible story and theme and skills demonstrated by a cast of children along with young adult leaders.

Since then KidsHubTV has become more interactive and created a platform for local KidsHubs groups & young people around the world to make their own videos and share it on www.kidshubtv.com and facebook. Bible story animations and animated titles & music have also been shared so groups can make their own TV programs in different countries.

The long-term goal of KidsHubTV is to encourage young people to make christian videos and thereby share their opinions, skills & talents globally via mobile phones and www.kidshubtv.com.

Writer’s Workshop Births New KidsHubs Ideas

Imagine a young entrepreneurs’ KidsHub where young people learn business skills and are discipled to become passionate & successful business people for Christ. These were just one set of KidsHub sessions that were birthed at a recent Writer’s Workshop in Limuru, Kenya. 28 children’s ministry workers from 7 African & 2 South Asian countries came together to create new resources for their context. These talented and inspiring practitioners had a great week learning and practicing creative thinking process and tools for writing, before starting to write some amazing lessons for children and teens. These will appear on KidsHubs.com and Max7.org when ready, so watch this space!

KidsHubTV Ethiopia

Every Saturday morning children in Ethiopia (and worldwide) are glued to the new TV show ‘Tesfa Teweled’ (‘Hope Generation’). One of only 4 Amharic children’s TV shows currently airing in Ethiopia it is gaining in popularity fast. “Children have been ringing us from rural areas as far as the Kenyan border saying how much they love it. Another child from the north part of Ethiopia called to tell us he and his friends in the village come together to watch the show” said Sami. Sami and a colleague from the Child Development Training & Research Centre (CDTRC) were inspired to make their own version of KidsHubTV in partnership with El Shaddai TV after attending a KidsHubs & KidsHubTV training in Uganda last year. It is the only Christian children’s TV show Amharic speakers can access worldwide via the El Shaddai Satellite network.

The show is divided in two halves: for parents offering interviews and advice; and then fun Bible animations, skill teaching segments & games just for children. Elizabeth the show’s Producer said “pastors, parents and children ministers have been calling from not only Ethiopia but South Africa and South Sudan Ethiopian churches too, telling us they like the show and seeking advice for their children’s ministry.” One mother called and said, “The show helps me to understand and value my children better and helps me to know how to relate to my children and how to nurture them holistically.”

Too Many Kids!

In a KidsHub started in a poor community in Nairobi, leader Lucy was overwhelmed with too many kids. “Each time we ran the KidsHub more and more children would turn up, 250 one week, then 300, then 400 and we were only a team of 4 leaders. I even tried to run the Hub at different times & fortnightly in the hope that fewer children would turn up but they kept coming!” Faced with such a fantastic problem Lucy looked to the community for help. She made every child bring someone from his or her household to the KidsHub. She shared the vision of KidsHubs with the parents & carers present. She then asked them to form a committee to help run the KidsHub with her and be responsible to supply porridge to the children when they met. In short “if the community didn’t become involved we couldn’t run the Kidshub” said Lucy. The community agreed and the KidsHub is continuing with the help of the locals. The majority do not have Christian backgrounds but see the value in what Lucy and her team are doing. What a challenge and what a great solution!

Children’s Ministry as the Presence of God

One writer has suggested that the strength of Jesus’s ministry was not merely his witness but in fact his ‘withness’. He was with people. What might that look like for us as we engage in ministry to children?

Dave Roberts is a writer and children’s ministry advocate.

Roberts shows the fascinating historical link between the worldwide Premier football league and the church. He goes on to show how KidsHubs and Ubabalo are both ministry models promoting ‘withness’ amongst leaders and children learning & growing together.

Gardening Hub in Guatemala prison

Every Monday inmates aged 15 – 18 years at a prison in Guatemala are busy growing vegetables and learning about Jesus. The government of Guatemala is allowing this Gardening Hub as a trial working with young men who have been part of the “Maras Gang”, in jail for committing violent crimes. These boys cannot use any tools, not even plastic ones to grow the vegetables.

It is great to see the creativity of faithful Christians in Guatemala reaching the unreachable.

Photography & Prayer Go Together

At a recent KidsHubs photography workshop for children in Kampala, Uganda children were asked to write down what they were expecting from the training. To the leader’s surprise children said they wanted to learn how to pray. And pray they did! The leader said “their prayer requests were touching.”
I want to pass primary seven with 4 aggregates
I want my parents to respect God
I want God to forgive me of my sins
I want to be faithful
I want a bright future
The children learnt about the importance of light in photography and the true light of Jesus. Children took 2500 pictures and many learnt how to pray and why they should pray.

KidsHub Media Workshops a Winner!

Togo Media KidsHub led by young team
Three teen leaders first introduced to the KidsHub Media sessions in 2013 are now leading their own KidsHubs. For 3 weeks Wisdom, Fonetico and Zeka have taken children through the KidsHub Media guide. As their leader in Togo said: “It’s great to see them take on the leadership role. It’s one of the outcomes of that first training.”

Secunderabad, India
About 50 kids aged 5-16 years attended a day-long KidsHubs Media workshop at a church in Secunderabad. The children loved the interactivity and creative tools like filming and story telling. Pearl who ran the workshop said “they were enthusiastic and eager to do KidsHubs on a regular basis. They believe that the KidsHubs idea will help generate interest in their children and teens and bring them to church.”

Liberian Orphans’ Computer Camp

A 5 day KidsHub camp was held in Monrovia, Liberia in August. 36 orphans learnt about computers and discipleship in Jesus. The KidsHubs computer sessions were used by an enthusiastic female leader who has a passion for computers. Meanwhile the team in Monrovia are restarting plans for KidsHubTV now things are settling down after the Ebola outbreak. Pray for them.
