Most middle class parents in Africa are concerned about the competition in schools, universities and social opportunities because of their huge population and limited resources. They make special efforts to give their children a good foundation in education. They send them to tuition and special classes even on weekends. The church has lost many of these children.

A ministry leader in Ghana who is also a software developer was inspired by the idea of KidsHubs i.e. mentoring using life skills and the Bible. He is developing this idea where teens can learn computer coding, do some sports, build values and become disciples. This model has the potential to become a bridge for the church to reach out to the parents and children.

In April this year, 10 children and 10 Sunday school teachers took part in a KidsHubs training event. They learnt puppetry to tell the good news of Jesus and focused on a servant leadership strategy and heart values to use in their local KidsHubs group.

The group were involved in filming a KidsHubTV show. This episode was designed by the Sunday school teachers to reach out to children from all backgrounds and religions in their community. They filmed a range of segments with children doing a short drama about sharing, a Ubabalo soccer skills session, acrobatics and a children’s choir. Preschoolers involved in a Helping Hands project were also caught on video. Interviews with both parents and children were also filmed about health & hygiene, the importance of good behavior & an education as well child abuse.

The team in Morogoro, TZ hope to make 100 copies of their KidsHubTV DVD to distribute in their community. Their next project is to create short 3 minute segments to upload on YouTube and kidshubtv.com.

Regional KidsHubs Camp in Hedomé, Togo : 10 – 22 August

Imagine being part of a KidsHub at the pyramids in Giza, Egypt. Children in Egypt visited the pyramids and other historical monuments & museums as part of their church’s KidsHub cultural lessons. They also researched the 7 wonders of the world and the 10 longest rivers. And not only cultural sessions, but also skills in art, carpentry, drama, languages, computer, music and even the statues industry were taught.

4000 children in 50 churches were involved in KidsHubs last year in Egypt. A young enthusiastic team working with Egyptian Pastor Steven have written a 12 week curriculum to share. Including special sessions to encourage biblical literacy called ‘The Tabernacle’. From this 1900 children were also involved in a country-wide competition. The material was complemented by daily devotions for children to do at home.

The team’s fantastic approach has seen children reached holistically. Sessions have been created and events run specifically to cover spiritual, physical, psychological, social and cultural aspects of a child’s life.

Churches have also been providing practical help in covering medical expenses, food and clothing for the more needy amongst them.

Special events have been run including a camp involving 600 children and 10 churches with the theme ‘Heal me and use me’. Children’s festivals in three regions involved 2100 children and saw 350 give their lives to Jesus.

This year they are hoping to reach 10,000 children through KidsHubs across Egypt, disciple 3000 children, assist 500 children with food, clothing and medicine and train 700 leaders. And if that’s not enough 20 churches have indicated they want to make KidsHubTV. Incredible!
