Disney has recently released a movie all about KidsHubs. ‘Queen of Katwe‘ tells the true story of a committed christian brother, Robert Katende working in sports ministry in the Katwe slum in Kampala, Uganda. There is an example of a sports KidsHub! But he sees groups of young people watching yet not participating. So he offers to teach them chess. Robert is an Engineer by profession with a sharp mind and uses his passion for the game of chess to teach the group the skills of planning, strategy and opens up a whole new world to them. He links his faith, his personal story and God’s living Word to the game of chess. The group go on to compete in Uganda’s National chess championship. One girl – Phiona even represents Uganda at the International Chess Olympiad.
Robert is still working in Katwe, teaching children chess & coaching them in football. Phiona is just starting University and a number of those Robert discipled are moving forward in their education and desire to give back to their community. It is a testimony of discipleship in action.
Do you have a skill you can pass on and a passion to share your life and faith with a small group of children? Perhaps you can fix cars, cook, garden, build things, dance; love maths, computers, making videos or playing football. Any skill you have a passion for can be passed on to a child along with your passion for Jesus. If you need some ideas look at some of the resources on the KidsHubs website. If you love sport take a look at Ubabalo Whole Life Coaching resources on readysetgo.ec.
And…share with us on the KidsHubs Facebook page what you’re doing. Maybe Disney will have to make more movies about what God is doing!
