KidsHubs and Sports

Screen Shot 2016-04-06 at 10.57.46 PMIndia just finished hosting the T20 world cup. The West Indies are the new women and mens champions. Millions of people around the world watch and play cricket. In fact up to 80% of the world population play or watch sport.

One of the easiest ways to start a Kidshub is through sport. Kids love sport and games. Coaching kids around a sport and linking this to the Bible is being implemented by many people around the world. A great way to get started is using Ubabalo Kids. Find it here on the KidsHubs site or go to the ReadySetGo website or here
And go to  the KidsHubTV facebook page in the next few weeks to see sports related videos from KidsHubTV India.

Disciple Making – what is it?

afa4873371654344af5a7b0fa59843c3Jim Putman in his book REAL LIFE DISCIPLESHIP says, “Discipleship is intentional, relational, and strategic”. Making disciples is a life long process. It is not just a program, it is a lifestyle. It is empowering an individual to live a life in relationship with God. It is the very intent of God and Jesus carefully demonstrated it when he mentored his disciples and they in turn, the world. The idea, intent and command have not changed for over 2000 years but the methodology has changed in different generations. We have seen several movements and reformations and revolutions in the church history. Each of these was birthed according to the felt need of that generation.

What is the felt need of the 21st century child and youth? The life of a child in the 21st century is way different to that of their grandparents and parents, 20th century adults. There is a generation gap even among the 21st century born children because of the advancement of technology and the physical conditions of the world they live in. They are dealing with 4 generations of people influencing their lives. How relevant can we be to them? One of the ways to be relevant is to see what influences them and use that as a medium to share the absolute truth about God.

The typical approach of a Sunday school, children’s ministry or youth ministry is information based designed by people of the 20th century. Innovative ways are limited to yearly events like summer camps. What should change? Richard Jacobson from churchanarchist.com says, “Discipleship is about making a large investment in a small number of people rather than making a small investment in a large number of people.” Small groups mean more individual attention, personal interaction and strong relationships. KidsHubs goes one step further in small groups. It is application/skill-based. The children then use these skills to serve their church and local community and in some cases build a career.

Neighborhood Hubs

Screen Shot 2016-03-03 at 12.14.22 AM“Only 4% of children in the US see life through a Christian worldview. We need new outreach for a new day in order to reach so many kids who don’t know the love of Jesus” says Karen Helmuth, one of the key drivers behind a new initiative called Neighborhood KidsHubs.

Neighborhood Kids Hubs is a collaborative training and networking initiative born out of two Global Children’s Forum projects—1for50 and KidsHubs. “We dream that every child in every neighborhood all across North America will have someone committed to helping them come to know and follow Jesus,” said Karen.

The Neighborhood KidsHubs movement is still young in North America. A pilot training (Community Outreach to Children) was held in Washington, with another training taking place in Pennsylvania in the coming months. Over the next year, Karen said “we hope to see teams of believers in several key cities across North America doing something new in their communities to reach kids for Jesus.”

Zeka

Three teens from Togo – Zeka, Fonetico and Wisdom first trained in KidsHubs Media in 2013. Today they are all running their own KidsHubs groups and making KidsHubTV videos. Zeka (20 years) writes “My father died from heart attack in 2013; my mother is a bear cake seller. With KidsHubs, I want to make disciples for Jesus, through broadcast show and surely make media as my profession. Everyday we are involved in the children ministry. The kids and teens that we are serving are very gifted and talented. I am so glad to be an instrument that the Lord is using to serve them.”

Fonetico (far right)

Fonetico (19 years) writes, “I am the last born of a family of 7 persons, my father is dead and my mother is small fish seller. I love Jesus and I love video and I want to use video to share Jesus with my friends and everybody.”

Wisdom

Wisdom (20 years) explains that both parents are without work and life is very hard. But says, “I am seriously involved in KidsHub because it is a good platform to learn more (about) God through bible studies; I love kids; we learn media & other skills at KidsHub gatherings and it is an amazing experience. I wish to be one of the best cameramen for the Lord.”

Eric their mentor said, “We are experiencing the best and exciting moment of our life through the KidsHub strategy, it is all about disciple making.” The three teens could not have expressed it better when they wrote, “Our dream is to see every child become Jesus’ disciple through media.”

Our KidsHubTV team covered the event …many people it was a surprise to them seeing children with cameras…I never knew that KidsHub media is another tool for discipling children. More thanks to Pr.Richard for introducing me to this tool and mentorship.” (Edwin was first brought to a KidsHubs & TV training in Dubai in 2013 by Richard Charles).

KidsHubs Camp Trains Leaders

ce130fa5cc14917e0c61741876df3a58Imagine a camp for children where their leaders come along to be trained at the same time. This is what happened at a 3 day Christmas KidsHub camp in Arusha, Tanzania in December 2015. 150 children attended the camp from 20 different centres accompanied by 32 Sunday school teachers and group leaders. The children had a great time learning skills and playing sports & games while learning more about Jesus. Camp organizer Andrew said “leaders were also equipped on how to multiply groups and make disciples who can then disciple other kids through KidsHubs centres in their respective churches.” What a great idea having children and their leaders playing, learning & loving Jesus together at the one camp.

A pastor challenged to make disciples

DSC_8429 DSC_8437From cities to remote villages, KidsHubs trainers have been busy over the last few months in India. One highlight from these trainings was the story of a seasoned children’s pastor who attended the Imagine conference in Hyderabad in late 2015. KidsHub trainer Pearl wrote: “The pastor would have trained hundreds of Sunday school teachers and those interested in children’s ministry. He and his wife were so shocked that in all their training, they were focussing only on evangelizing and emotional healing but not on discipleship. He said they are now committed to make that shift in their ministry. He is also translating KidsHub lessons into Telugu and this has challenged him to think about discipling children more seriously. He wants us to come with him to rural villages and train others. The request for training especially those from rural villages and orphanages is overwhelming. The city preachers demand a lot of money to minister in these places. They were even happy and verbally blessed the KidsHub team for providing the resources free of charge and as an open resource.”

Paraplegic Boy finds Hope

ShahidShahid was born paralysed from birth unable to use his legs. From a poor urban area in South Asia his family cannot afford a wheelchair for him. Shahid felt he never had a future with no hope of meaningful employment. A Computer KidsHub run in his neighbourhood changed all that. “Suddenly he saw a future for himself working in IT – he had hope!” enthused his KidsHub leader. The boy attended a series of KidsHub sessions on the basics of computing. For him and the many who attended they had never touched a laptop before. The leader was excited that the computer sessions also gave them an opportunity to disciple these children, as they were not from Christian backgrounds. He is excited to follow up the young boy and see his computing skills built upon and his friendship with Jesus too.
